Students Become the Teachers at ETM-LA’s Snacks & Sounds Series

Through ETM-LA’s “Snacks & Sounds” Series, Ensemble Programs welcome parents to take part in what their children are learning, all while enjoying delicious treats. The Series provides an opportunity for parents to directly observe the music classroom and get a taste of what their students are learning.

This year, teachers encouraged students to become the teachers by instructing their parents in the same musical skills they’re practicing in class. At Aldama Elementary School’s Oranges with Orff, ETM-LA Music Teacher Mentor Lesley Baird led students in a performance of two movements from The Battle of the Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air – a piece they recently performed at ETM-LA’s Music Unites the World Festival. Parents were rapt watching their children perform up close and learned how the multi-layered piece is brought to life through various instruments. Then, the guests were invited to find an instrument in the room and trade places with their children. Ms. Baird and the students taught parents the rhythmic patterns in the “Earth” movement. Within minutes, parents were playing the song all together under the careful supervision of their children.

The “Snacks & Sounds” series goes beyond a formal concert, allowing parents to engage meaningfully with students to gain a deeper understanding of the sequential, comprehensive music program. They learn how teachers break down musical concepts, instruct in practical application, and inspire creativity and music growth. When parents get to participate in the music lesson, they experience firsthand the joyful power of music.

One Parent shared: “It’s great getting to see the process, and not just the end result. We get to see what they’re experiencing on a daily basis.” Another parent whose daughter taught her to play the xylophone commented: “The kids feel so empowered sharing their skills with us. And I felt proud of myself, so I definitely know how they feel.”

ETM-LA believes that all children deserve access to quality music education. Bringing parents and the community into the joyful process of music making nurtures the longevity of music as part of the school culture.
