14th Annual Benefit Gala

Silent Films Live II

Silent Films Live II featured brand new scores for classic silent films by highly-acclaimed artists/composers Nathan Barr, Sean Callery, Fil Eisler, Blake Neely, William Ross, Arturo Sandoval, and Lisbeth Scott. Dedicated ETM-LA Associates Board Member and Artistic Director/Conductor Angel Velez led the Trojan Chamber Orchestra. Prolific Film Music Producer Robert Townson hosted the program which included Toccata for Toy Trains by Elmer Bernstein with new orchestration by Emilie Bernstein, preceded by a special tour of the famous Wurlitzer organ. Proceeds from all three SOLD OUT performances were donated to ETM-LA’s programs!

9th Annual Music Unites the World Festival

On March 13 and 14, 2019, over 700 students from Education Through Music-Los Angeles partner schools converged on the Skirball Cultural Center to demonstrate the unifying power of music. EXCLUSIVE FIRST MAN Q&A EVENT AT GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY 

On Thursday, November 29, ETM-LA and Friends Of The Observatory launched a new partnership to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) initiatives. This partnership started with the  FIRST MAN Screening and Q&A in the 180-seat Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theatre at Griffith Observatory.

Sponsored by Universal Pictures, a Q&A featuring Academy Award-Winning Composer Justin Hurwitz (First Man, La La Land, Whiplash) and other First Man filmmakers.

Winter Partner School Concerts 2017

12th Annual Benefit Gala

Tuesday, November 28, 2017 was a note-worthy evening as Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) hosted its 12th Anniversary Benefit Gala. Supporters from the music, film and education communities gathered to honor Grammy-Winning Violinist Joshua Belland Veteran Music Teacher (Foshay Learning Center, Los Angeles Unified School District) Vincent Womack at the Skirball Cultural Center. The event was hosted by Malcolm McDowell (Mozart in the Jungle), and featured special performances and presentations by Joshua Bell (Grammy winning violinist), Billy Childs (Grammy winning pianist/composer), Judith Hill (The Voice, Prince, Michael Jackson), Joanne Pearce Martin (pianist, Los Angeles Philharmonic,) Dr. Lemmon McMillan, guest Chris Botti (Grammy winning trumpeter), Foshay Learning Center Students and Education Through Music-LA Students. Executive Director of ETM-LA Victoria Lanier welcomed co-chair hosts Lola Debney and Alecia Spendlove.  Honorary chairs of the gala include music education champions and celebrities such as Tony Bennett and Susan Benedetto, Jane LynchMichael GiacchinoEd HelmsRandy SpendloveBob SagetJohn Debney, Malissa Shriver, and Tavis Smiley, along with other community leaders.

Yelp Helps: Raise the Roof

On October 23, 2017, Angelenos got to come explore OUE Skyspace for Yelp Helps: Raise the Roof with DJ Cathleen Cher! Attendees enjoyed music, drinks, food, and 360 degree views of Los Angeles at the beautiful Downtown OUE Skyspace! They also had the option to learn to DJ with Cathleen Cher, who happens to be one of our Associates Board Members, take fun photos with props at the Yelp photo booth, and try food from local vendors - all while benefitting music education in schools!

Speakers included Sebastian Krys (Record Producer, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan), Rory Pullens (Executive Director, Los Angeles Unified Arts Education Branch), Pamela Marcello (Representative, Congressman Adam Schiff’s Office), Vargas, and Booker White (ETM-LA Chairman; Music Library Director, Walt Disney Pictures and Television).

11th Annual Benefit Gala

Supporters of music education throughout Los Angeles joined Education Through Music-Los Angeles on Sunday December 4th at the Skirball Center to honor actor and musician Ed Helms (The Office, The Lorax) and veteran music teacher Richard Meyer for their support of music education in schools. The night began with a show-stopping performance by the Hooper Elementary Percussion Ensemble, and continued with performances by ETM-LA String and Vocal Ensembles comprised of ETM-LA students from Castelar Elementary, Dorris Place Elementary, and Providencia Elementary. Host Andy Richter entertained guests throughout the night and introduced performances by Moby, Dustbowl Revival, & Lisa Loeb. Lawton Gray presented Richard Meyer with the 2016 Shining Star Honoree award, and Christina Applegate and Angela Kinsey presented Ed Helms with the 2016 Shining Star Honoree Award for their respective work in championing music education in disadvantaged schools.

Music students from Education Through Music-Los Angeles partner with Castelar Elementary (Los Angeles) and play Frere Jacques in a round. Giving thanks to all those who gave support to their school and music.

 

 

 

Academy Award- Winning Song "Glory" (Paramount/Selma- Common & John Legend) - Education Through Music-Los Angeles Gala 2015

Students from schools across Los Angeles perform Academy Award®, Golden Globe- winning and Grammy- nominated song “Glory” from Selma at Education Through Music- LA’s 10th Anniversary Benefit Gala. The performance was made even more special with Academy Award®- Winning Artist and Actor Common in the audience, who gave them a standing ovation. Common was on hand to present the Shinning Star Award to Paramount Pictures; President of Worldwide Music & Publishing Randy Spendlove. Other artists featured that evening include En Vogue, Erick McCormack, Goo Goo Dolls’ , Johnny Rzeznik, Michelle Branch, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Tyler, Jimmie Wood, and more. As well as solos performed by two students from Cleveland Elementary School (Pasadena Unified School District).
