Gifts in Memory of Brandon Toh

Brandon was a gifted musician, composer, and music-industry professional, who believed in the value and power of music in education and throughout life. Born and raised in the Pasadena area, he began his music studies with classical violin from a young age and played in local youth and school orchestras throughout his childhood. While in middle school, he started to sing publicly and taught himself to play the guitar. He went on to form rock bands and took major roles in school and professional theater productions.

He trained in contemporary music more formally as an adult, earning a certificate at Musicians Institute in Hollywood for guitar, music theory, and composition.

He was a sound editor and sound designer at the rOOm media studio in Venice, and also ran his own studio at home. He did sound design and editing, mixing, and composition for numerous advertisements, short films, and videos of best-selling recording artists, including the Grammy-nominated video of “When You Were Young” by The Killers. He scored and did full sound work for the feature film “Journey to the Center,” which won Best Adventure Film at the 2008 X-Dance Film Festival. He also continued to play, write, and record his own music, both solo and with collaborators, experimenting and refining his studio techniques, his composition, and his artistry.

The Flight

by Brandon Toh
(December 31, 1974 – March 17, 2012)

I’m on and on
And I fly
And when I close my eyes
I’m in a different — a different world
And look at what I’ve found
Look at what I’ve found
A sound that lifts me up from the old ground . . .
