LOS ANGELES, CA On April 20, 2022, Education Through Music-LA (ETM-LA) received the honor of being named “Outstanding Collaboration Honoree” by the Los Angeles Business Journal at the Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards. The award recognized ETM-LA’s partnership with NBCUniversal, Illumination’s Sing 2, and Education Through Music (ETM).

In November 2021, NBCUniversal and Illumination teamed up with ETM and ETM-LA to raise support and awareness of the importance of music education while commemorating the launch of the animated film Sing 2. From the partnership, the #Sing2gether Challenge was created as a contest on TikTok to engage stakeholders and consumers in conversation about the film while celebrating the power of music. For every use of the hashtag #Sing2gether on TikTok, $1 was donated to support the work of ETM (including ETM-LA in Los Angeles County), up to $250,000 (with funds from Comcast, NBCUniversal, and Republic Records).

The #Sing2gether Challenge kicked off with Sing 2 stars Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, other cast members, and social media influencers announcing the contest. The week-long campaign garnered over 5.1B views, 729.8M engagements (comments, likes, shares), and 1.5M contest entries, with awareness through additional media channels.

As Sing 2 showcases the life-changing power of music and “dreaming big to reach your goals,” the award-winning partnership demonstrated how key collaborations can amplify positive outcomes for students in under-resourced schools across the country.

While accepting the award, ETM-LA Executive Director Victoria Lanier remarked, “We are grateful to NBCUniversal and Illumination on the film Sing 2 to help amplify our mission to expand programs nationally with ETM. This award is about partnership and it’s truly a team effort to keep music in schools, so through music, creativity, and innovation we can uplift our communities and the future leaders of tomorrow.”
