Los Angeles, CA – Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) has been approved for a Grants for Arts Projects award to support its Core Curriculum Music Education Program. ETM-LA’s project is among the more than 1,100 projects across America totaling nearly $27 million that were selected during this second round of Grants for Arts Projects fiscal year 2021 funding.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to imagine returning to a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce funding that will help arts organizations such as Education Through Music-Los Angeles reengage fully with partners and audiences,” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Although the arts have sustained many during the pandemic, the chance to gather with one another and share arts experiences is its own necessity and pleasure.”

Through ETM-LA’s Core Curriculum Music Education Program, every student receives yearlong, weekly music class. ETM-LA believes that music instruction, when integrated into the school day, supports transferable skills between music and all subjects. It also nurtures character development, self-esteem, and social skills. The goal of the program is to provide not just access to music instruction, but also to level the playing field by serving every child equitably regardless of income, background, or ability.

ETM-LA’s Core Curriculum Music Education Program provides a solution to meet the need for quality arts education in low-income area schools, helping generate systemic change to close the achievement gap. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ETM-LA pivoted to continue uninterrupted music classes through distance learning methods including synchronous and asynchronous instruction. ETM-LA also created an extensive video library of original virtual resources that includes music instruction, wellness, and music therapy-inspired videos. These resources were provided to school partners as well as all visitors to the organization’s website, www.etmla.org. In-person music instruction resumes in the 2021-22 school year.
