Two Winning Los Angeles Schools Will Attend Private Screening of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie with Ed Helms

On May 22, 2017, students from two disadvantaged Los Angeles County schools will experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a private pre-screening of the film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie with Actor Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover, The Lorax), the voice of Mr. Krupp/Captain Underpants. Hosted by Education Through Music-Los Angeles at DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, approximately sixty students and their parents from McKinley Elementary (Compton) and Providencia Elementary (Burbank) will be treated to a sneak preview of this highly anticipated film along with a special Q&A with Helms.

Both schools were top winners in a Facebook contest presented by Education Through Music-Los Angeles. Teachers, students, principals, friends, and colleagues all rallied together to get the most “likes” (i.e. votes) for their school to see this screening with Ed Helms. Helms sits on the Advisory Board for Education Through Music-Los Angeles and is a long-time champion for their mission to restore music education in schools. A musician himself, Helms takes the time to visit low-income area schools and music classrooms, recently performing banjo for students at Normandie Elementary in South Central Los Angeles with fellow bluegrass artists Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins.

ETM-LA honored Helms with a Shining Star Award at their past December 11th Annual Gala with help from artists and actors including Moby, Andy Richter, Lisa Loeb, Christina Applegate, Angela Kinsey, Michael Giacchino, John Debney, and Dustbowl Revival. “The gap in education opportunities in different communities is one of the great social injustices, and Education Through Music-LA plugs right into that in a very smart and critical way,” said Helms. “Music has impact. And ETM-LA is a force-multiplier for that impact. [They] put teachers back in the schools, provide a curriculum, [and] provide resources.”

Based on the worldwide sensation and bestselling book series by Dav Pilkey, and boasting an A-list cast of comedy superstars headed by Kevin Hart and Ed Helms, DreamWorks Animation brings audiences the long-awaited global movie event, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. This raucously subversive comedy for the entire family tells the story of two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold, who hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants. Directed by David Soren and produced by Mireille Soria, p.g.a. and Mark Swift, p.g.a., Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie features the voice talents of Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele and Kristen Schaal.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie opens in theaters nationwide June 2, 2017.
