Music Unites Communities Across Los Angeles

On March 15-16, 2017, Education Through Music-Los Angeles will host its 7th Annual Music Unites the World Festival as part of Music In Our Schools Month (National Association for Music Education). Approximately 600 students from 22 of Education Through Music-LA’s partner schools across Los Angeles County will come together – Boyle Heights, Burbank, Chinatown, Compton, East LA, Elysian Park, North Hollywood, Pacoima, Pasadena, South Central, Sylmar, and other communities – to perform songs from around the world. The two-day festival will commence at Hooper Elementary School in South Central and will showcase the achievement of Los Angeles youth, along with the transformative power that music plays in unifying people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and geographies.

The students were chosen based on their written essay on the topic “Why Learning Music is Important to Me,” as well as their strong participation in music class. In addition to putting on a special performance, the students will receive the unique experience of working with renowned guest artists and coaches. This year’s guest artists include: Sally Stevens (Vocal Conductor, The Academy Awards, Hans Zimmer, Fox Simpsons), Carmen Twillie (Soloist, The Lion King), Misha Shtangrud (Choir Conductor, Colburn School), Joseph Trapanese (Composer, Straight Outta Compton, Oblivion), Vince Womack (Music and Band Director, Foshay Learning Center) and other influential keynote speakers.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles (www.etmla.org) provides quality yearlong in-school music instruction in disadvantaged Los Angeles schools as part of the core curriculum for every child. In our 11th year, we are serving 25 schools reaching approximately 12,000 schoolchildren with weekly music education.  Major sponsors for the festival include: Donut Friend, Premier Lighting, and Curly and Spike.

Location: Hooper Elementary School – 1225 E. 52nd St. Los Angeles, CA 90011
