Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Requirements

As part of our dedication in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for the children we serve, and in alignment with school district policies, effective 2025, all volunteers are required to complete a Live Scan before continuing their volunteer activities. Those who Volunteer 16+ hours per month, or 32 hours per year, will need to complete a CANRA Form and volunteer mandated reporter training. Volunteers wishing to become in-school Music Teacher Assistants must complete a TB test or TB clearance in addition to the CANRA Form and mandated reporter training before they can volunteer on a school campus.

Event Volunteers

ETM-LA presents many formal and informal events throughout the year. These include school- & community-based concerts and festivals at partner school sites and local venues, school visits by musicians & artists, and various fundraising events. Event volunteers may assist with such duties as stage production, set-up, managing guest arrivals/ seating, working on musical activities, event take-down, & more.

Live Scan (All Volunteers)

  • All Volunteers will need to complete a Live Scan. Please see the Live Scan Instructions (information only) and Live Scan Form to be completed and submitted as part of the onboarding process.
  • The Live Scan form will be provided to the applicant upon successful completion of the orientation, application,  and interview steps.

Office Volunteers

Office volunteering is open to all ages, and has included seniors as well as those looking for substantive work experience in a growing music education nonprofit organization. The exact duration and duties will be determined based on the applicant’s skills and the organization’s current need.

TB Screening/Test (In-School Volunteers Only)

  • Volunteers wishing to become an in-school Music Teacher’s Assistant will need to complete a TB test or TB clearance prior to being allowed on school campus. If you have a current TB test, please notify ETM-LA Staff. Otherwise, please schedule a TB test or TB clearance at your earliest convenience. Many healthcare providers and local clinics offer this service.
  • Please complete the attached TB Evaluation Form. Please note, you will be required to visit your healthcare provider or local clinic twice – 1) for the TB injection, and 2) return between 48-72 hours later for the healthcare provider or clinic to read the TB results.
  • Per the Los Angeles County Department of Health, a negative TB test is typically valid for 4 years.

Music Teacher Assistants (MTA) / Piano Accompanists

Volunteers available during regular school hours may apply (second interview required), to assist Music Teachers in the classroom. MTAs will assist teachers with various classroom duties and lessons based on that teacher’s requirements. Additionally, ETM-LA often needs pianists to accompany students during concerts and/or rehearsals. Volunteers wishing to work in schools must complete Mandated Reporter Training and CANRA Form (details below).

CANRA Form & Mandated Reporter Training (In-School and Regular Volunteers Only)

  • Volunteers wishing to become an in-school Music Teacher’s Assistant, and those volunteering 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year will need to complete a CANRA form and Volunteer Mandated Reporter Training.
  • The Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) Form states that you acknowledge that you are identified as a “mandated reporter”, and are required to report any suspected cases of child abuse and/or neglect encountered.
  • ETM-LA Staff will assist with the process of completing your Volunteer Mandated Reporter Training once you have been approved as a Music Teacher Assistant.
  • California Assembly Bill 506 (AB 506) requires youth service organizations to provide mandated reporter training for their volunteers, employees, and administrators.
  • Volunteers who are 18 years or older and have direct contact with children for more than 16 hours per month or 32 hours per year are considered “regular” volunteers.
