Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program:  Education Through Music-LA

PROGRAM AND OPERATIONS INTERN – (10 Weeks – Summer 2019)

 

Job Description

 

The Program & Operations Intern will work with the Education Through Music-Los Angeles staff to facilitate the processing and management of program evaluation data. The intern will manage a music instrument inventory database, organize professional development materials, and collect data from student assessments. The intern will also assist with operations, including finance, technology, and general administration.

 

The ETM-LA Program & Operations Intern will assist with the following:

  1. Facilitate the collection and data entry of student year-end evaluations. Evaluation materials will include: student performance rubrics, year-end assessments, and sample work. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn about different assessment methods.
  2. Develop and implement updates to existing instrument inventory system. The Program & Operations Intern will collect music instrument information from ETM-LA partner schools and record updated information in inventory database software. Intern will report on needed upgrades, repairs, and potential replacements. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn about standard school instruments, minor repair skills, and the process for the ongoing maintenance of music program instrument resources.
  3. Organize and prepare resources for music teacher professional development. The Program & Operations Intern will have the opportunity to learn about the various tools, resources, and materials that a music teacher can utilize for best practice in the music classroom.
  4. Manage and expand the Music Education Library and Resource Center, which will allow ETM-LA staff members to keep track of which items have been borrowed. The Intern will collate and assemble resource materials and design an organized cataloging system.
  5. Assist in developing curriculum and lesson planning materials for music teachers. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn about how to write a standard music lesson plan.

 

Other day-to-day activities will include:

  • Data processing, research, and summarizing findings.
  • Learning database management (with the use of FileMaker Pro).
  • Creating Excel spreadsheets for the management of program evaluation data.
  • Using software programs including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, Google Apps.
  • Updating music education curriculum materials, school-year calendars, rosters, and resources.
  • Providing additional assistance in assembling and preparing training material, school materials, and helping with instrument collection

The Program & Operations Intern should display an earnest interest in arts education and must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable. Interest in learning about database creation and management as well as other software is favorable for this position. Basic computer skills, such as Excel and Word, will be necessary for program evaluation work. It is strongly preferred that the intern has his/her own vehicle in order to successfully fulfill the duties of this position. A positive attitude, motivation and desire to learn about music education in Los Angeles are also a must.

 

As a result of this experience, the Program & Operations Intern will be able to:

  • Independently complete a project from beginning to end with minimal supervision.
  • Develop the understanding of best practices in music education.
  • Gain knowledge in program assessment and evaluation for arts education non-profits.
  • Implement a process for overseeing and tracking music instruments and evaluating needed repairs.
  • Develop an efficient library management system, which may be adapted and applied in future work.
  • Improve the curriculum presentation for arts education programs.
  • Further understand the impact that quality music education has on at-risk youth and their communities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Student eligibility for internship positions is limited currently enrolled community or undergraduate four-year college/university students who reside in or attend college within the LA County. Students must have completed at least one semester or the equivalent by June 1, 2019 or will complete their undergraduate degree between May 1, 2019, and September 1, 2019 in order to be eligible to participate. Students must be able to legally work within the United States.

 

Students who have or will have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, or higher degree, on or before April 30, 2019 are not eligible. Students who have previously served as interns in the County’s Arts Internship Program are not eligible to participate a second time. The Arts Commission will verify the eligibility of each students invited to participate in the Arts Internship Program. Students will be asked to provide documents such as college transcripts, student ID and/or driver’s license, if available, to verify undergraduate enrollment or recent graduation and LA County residence.

 

 

This internship is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. More than 130 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at over 100 performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations throughout Los Angeles County. In addition to their full-time 10-week paid internship, interns will participate in several educational events as part of the program, which are funded by the Getty Foundation. The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County.
