Spotlight Tribute on Sonic Fuel Studios

"It’s not just music education, it’s life education."
- Tim Wynn, Sonic Fuel Studio Co-Founder

Education Through Music-Los Angeles looks forward to its 20th Year Benefit Gala, as we celebrate Sonic Fuel Studios (Co-Founders / Composers Christopher Lennertz & Tim Wynn) with the Shining Star Award. This honor is given to those whose contributions have positively impacted lives & communities. Having experienced the unifying effects of music, Wynn explains how Sonic Fuel Studios was inspired to remedy feelings of isolation. “I missed having musicians come together, playing my music, and just having this back and forth that really only music can do.” Lennertz elaborates, “We created what is now Sonic Fuel… and it was sort of all based on the idea of. ‘How do we make it feel more like in high school?’ When [music] was fun and we used to play in bands all the time.”

Both composers have seen and experienced the way music brightens all facets of our lives. Lennertz shares, “Art, music, and that joy of creating and having experiences with other people in an ensemble is something that is so important for the rest of your life, even outside of music.” Wynn adds, “Music is not an optional subject. It’s important because it affects all other subjects as well. It’s not just music education, it’s life education.”

Deeply inspired by his own high school music teacher, Lennertz recalls, “I had a teacher in high school – my music teacher – and she was the one who changed my life. She was the one who made me believe that I could move across the country to play and write music, and that changed everything. My life became what it is now because of that inspiration.” Wynn shares how he was also drawn to pursuing music: “For me, when it came to music, there wasn’t really a choice. I wanted to do lots of other things, but music was always the thing that brought me back.”

Understanding the power of music, Lennertz explains why he believes so strongly in making music more accessible for our youth: “There’s something about the feeling of music and the way it helps you feel and relate to other people that’s magical. And that can only come from art. So knowing what I know now as a composer, but also as the child of two teachers…There is nothing more important than supporting ETM-LA in their mission and making sure that we bring music to every kid, in every grade.”

Sonic Fuel Studios’ unwavering support for music education is deeply valued by ETM-LA and all of the communities who have felt the positive impact of music in their schools. We are proud to honor their generous contributions to our mission, and to work together to keep encouraging joyful, empowered, and well-rounded students. Thank you, Chris & Tim, for supporting our mission for music in under-resourced Los Angeles schools.
