Los Angeles, CA – On January 5th and 6th, Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) Music Teachers, Interns, and Program members came together for the annual Winter Training Institute in preparation for the Spring semester. Held at Dolores Mission School, educators explored meaningful activities, musical warm-ups, and new ideas, not only to spark inspiration for their class lessons, but to experience modern and culturally responsive methods for the music classroom.

This two-day training included sessions such as Restorative Practices in the Classroom, “Musical” Escape Room Activity, Singing Pedagogy 101 for General Music & Instrumental Classroom, So Now I’m Supposed to Be a Composer?, Best Practices for Mainstreamed Music Classes, Story Soundtrack, Teacher Activity Share Out, movement lesson sessions, and Spring semester Scope & Sequencing.

In its 17th year of programming, ETM-LA thanks the dedicated music faculty for their commitment to ongoing learning and excellence, and championing high-quality music education for every child. Reflecting on their key takeaways, one participant shared, “It is very hard for me to list out [just] one important thing – but…through each session presented today, how music study, practice and performance makes our world a better place.” Another added that there were “so many great ideas shared from diverse topics!”

ETM-LA’s programs are provided at no cost to the student; ongoing partnerships and contributions help provide hope and joy through music for students who would otherwise not have access to music education. “After-school programs by themselves are not enough. In-person learning during school opens up more possibilities, not just for the kids who sign up for after-school, but for everyone at school,” shared Band Teacher Dominick Mustacato.

Thank you to our Academy Workshop Facilitators: Abigail Barrett, Alex Collie-Hartmann, Dr. Lisa Crawford, Dr. Franklin Gómez, Ricardo Hurtado, Tonya Hylton, Arvi Lapuz, Deidre Racoma, and Tiffiny Reckley.

ETM-LA invites all levels of music teachers and educators to attend these trainings alongside ETM-LA Music Teachers. To stay informed about tickets for future professional development opportunities, please join our email list.
