Spotlight on Jennifer, Operations Coordinator

“Knowing how much music has enriched my life, I’m grateful to be part of an organization that helps bring that joy to children.”

Please share a little about yourself and what brought you to ETM-LA.

Before joining ETM-LA, I spent 14 years in the entertainment industry, where I worked as an accounting manager supporting equipment rentals and leases for film and TV productions around the world. I decided to pursue a new career path, which led me to my current work with ETM-LA’s Finance and HR departments. My staffing agency representative immediately thought I would be a good fit, and her enthusiasm for the organization made me excited to learn more. As someone who loves music, I was drawn to the opportunity to support an organization bringing music education to children.

How has music shaped your life?

Music is an essential part of my life. Hearing instruments played live gives me goosebumps—there’s something special about experiencing that beauty in person. We had a cellist perform at our wedding, which made the day even more meaningful. My husband and I have an eclectic taste in music and love going to concerts together. Exploring different styles has made me appreciate the creativity behind the music, something the film Amadeus also captured beautifully for me. Knowing how much music has enriched my life, I’m grateful to be part of an organization that helps bring that joy to children, especially those who might otherwise have limited access to music education.

How has your family’s heritage and culture influenced you?

Being half Salvadoran and half Guatemalan has taught me to appreciate my roots, my family, and the traditions that make me who I am. My heritage has shown me the importance of family, love, respect, and staying connected to where I come from. During Hispanic Heritage Month, I feel proud to celebrate my culture and appreciate all the other Latino countries that make our community so special. Every country has its own traditions, foods, music, and sounds, yet we share so much that brings us together, including our love for family, our history, and our pride in where we come from. Even though our cultures may be different, we are united by the beautiful things we share. I’m proud to be Salvadoran and Guatemalan, and I will always carry both cultures in my heart.

What are you hoping to gain from this role?

I hope to grow in my work with Finance and HR while learning more about the nonprofit world. I’m bringing years of accounting experience, and I’m excited to put those skills toward a mission that inspires me. Additionally, I also look forward to learning from my colleagues and understanding how our work behind the scenes helps make music education possible for children.

What has been the most surprising part of your time with ETM-LA so far?

The most pleasant surprise has been how inspired I’ve felt by this new direction in my career. It’s been especially encouraging to hear my colleagues share their love of music and see the passion they bring to the organization’s mission. Their enthusiasm has made me even more excited to be part of the team. I’m still early in my journey, but I’ve already found a meaningful connection to the work as I continue to learn and settle into my role.

Why is music education so important for every child?

Music brings so much joy to my life, and I believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover what it can bring to theirs. It offers a way to explore creativity, express feelings, and connect with others. Whether through their school or a community organization, children in every community should have the chance to learn music and be inspired by it.
