Despite the chilly morning weather and crack-of-dawn arrivals at Dodger’s Stadium, novice and veteran runners and joggers alike showed up with sheer excitement to take part in the LA 5K as part of LA Marathon’s 40th Anniversary. In honor of Music In Our Schools Month, Education Through Music-Los Angeles joined the LA 5K for the first time in our history with over 50 participants and supporters helping move the needle for equitable access to high-quality music education.
Coming together as a community and cheering on our team members as they crossed the finish line was the highlight of the event. I am so grateful to our runners and supporters who work tirelessly to help restore music education in local under-resourced schools.
– Victoria Lanier, Executive Director
Just before the race began, Director of Programs Dr. Franklin Gómez shared, “It’s really important to me that every kid receives comprehensive and sequential music education…That’s why I’m bringing my family to be a part of this message.” Gómez and his wife ran while pushing their young son in a stroller, finishing in under 47 minutes!
Board Member Linda Mouradian returned to Dodger Stadium for the first time in over 40 years to support ETM-LA’s mission. “My affiliation with ETM-LA is one of the high points in my 46 year music education career. ETM-LA is 100% aligned with my personal philosophy that music education is essential for all students. The 5K fundraiser was an event for me and those who support me and my goals to continue to shine light on ETM-LA and all the magnificent musical and social opportunities they are giving students in the most underserved communities. I will continue to serve ETM-LA in any way that promotes the things that mean the most to me and the students we teach.” Not only did Mouradian finish 14th in her age bracket, she was also a top fundraiser!
Music is the vehicle that connects the academic, creative, emotional, and spiritual intelligence of all children. More than any other time in my life, music must be present in all our children’s lives. It can be their lifeline to hope.
– Linda Mouradian, ETM-LA Board Member (shared in previous blog)
Charity Village – where participants ended the race – hosted ETM-LA’s booth along with 31 others, creating connections and synergy among our local communities.
ETM-LA’s 5K fundraiser will remain open until April 30th. Folks can DONATE NOW and congratulate runners on a job well done by helping support more students in local under-resourced schools with music education!
