Spotlight on Harmony, ETM-LA Student

"Music is important to me because without music others and I would not be able to express our emotions and feelings."

4th Grader Harmony Martinez has discovered her passion for music as a student in Ms. Lapuz’s music class. Harmony’s love for music shines through her joyful and confident personality. “Music class makes me feel happy because everyone is always having a good time,” she shares. Music makes her excited to learn something new each day in class.

Harmony’s connection with music is more than notes on a page. “Without music, others and I wouldn’t be able to express our emotions and feelings,” she explained. This sense of expression, along with the fun and creativity she finds in music, has transformed her school experience. “Music has changed my life,” she said.

Her father, José, sees how music is helping Harmony build essential skills:

She’s constantly stretching her brain by memorizing songs and choreography, which is
great for building memory and focus. Plus, music class fosters teamwork and
communication with her classmates—skills that will benefit her in all aspects of life. The
school concerts are a highlight. It’s fantastic to see her perform with her classmates and
witness the joy in everyone’s faces.

In an essay, Harmony described her belief that music is for everyone and is a way of uniting  people. “What I do to share music with people is practice with my classmates at music class so we can sing at a concert and bring our families together,” she wrote. Music is woven into every aspect of Harmony’s life, from school concerts to family gatherings and even on road trips. She believes that “every day is a good time to share music with others and bring everybody together.”

José has witnessed how music has become a central part of their home life:

Harmony and music have a beautiful connection. At home, she’s always humming and singing.
Music class at school is like her happy place; she can’t wait for it. It’s more than just fun for her;
it’s a way to express herself and her creativity.

Harmony’s journey through music highlights the power of education in fostering creativity, confidence, and community. As she continues to grow in her music studies, it’s clear that her connection with music will have a lasting impact, both in her personal life and within her school community.

Harmony’s Award Winning Essay:

I believe to share music with others all I have to do is sing and use my voice. What I do to share music with people is every month I practice with my classmates at music class so we can sing at a concert that we have every year and bring our families together.

Another example, music is a way of living, it can be found in many different cultures, and in many different languages. A lot of people use them in gatherings and parties, and they all dance together to have fun.

In addition, music can be used while working. It can also be used while doing your homework. Music is just part of everyday life, we can listen to it while cleaning the house or taking a family road trip.

To sum up, what I do to share music with others is practice at music class. We can sing at a concert and bring our families together. I also go to parties and gatherings with my family and friends and dance and have fun together. We also listen to music while taking road trips and we do karaoke and have fun together every time. I feel like everyday is a good time to share music with others and bring everybody together.
