Share about who you are and how you found ETM-LA. 

I am Mayra Hooker, and I have always had a passion for music and arts. I found out about ETM-LA through my college. I visited their office and was blown away by what they do. The dedication they show in bringing music education to under-resourced schools and the positive impact it has on students’ lives truly inspired me. Seeing their commitment to making a difference convinced me that I wanted to be a part of this incredible organization.

Why do you volunteer for ETM-LA?

I volunteer for ETM-LA because I believe in the power of music and arts education to transform lives. It brings joy, creativity, and confidence to students, and I want to be a part of that positive change. When I volunteered at McKinley H.E.A.L.s Fest in Compton with ETM-LA, I was in awe the entire time. It was incredible to see so many kids eagerly taking an interest in music and instruments. The way ETM-LA had everything set up was truly impressive, with various stations where kids could try out different instruments and learn about music. Watching their faces light up as they discovered new sounds and rhythms was incredibly rewarding. It made me realize how impactful music education can be and how it can inspire and bring joy to children. 

How has music and arts education impacted your life? 

Music and arts education has enriched my life by giving me an outlet for expression and creativity. It has also helped me develop discipline and resilience, which are valuable in all areas of life. I believe in ETM-LA’s mission because every student deserves access to a well-rounded education, which includes music. Music education promotes academic success, emotional well-being, and social skills, which are essential for personal development.
